I just felt like I needed to document a recent achievement. My darling hubby signed us up for a 100 km bike ride about 4 or 5 months ago in the hopes that it would be a good motivator to exercise. It was off and on and nearing ride day it was a dreaded black cloud looming that I didn’t want to talk about, like he who shall not be mentioned or something equally Harry Potterish…
Then a couple of days before it was brought up. I had been considering not riding, decreasing to 50 km, giving it a go and taking a taxi if I flamed out.
So the decision was made that we were just going to go for it. Now my IT band has still been causing my knees to be a bit painful but what the heck lets give it a go!
Got about 10 km in to the ride and Mark dropped something and had to go back for it. “Keep going, I’ll find you”. Derrr okay off I go on my own in the throng. Doing pretty good, found my self a target guy to keep up to and before I know it Mark is back.
Made it to 25 km, made it to 50 km hmmm not too bad. The thing that I am so glad I did was to stop for a snack and sports drink at 75 km. After that I took off like a shot! Really who would have thought that my best 25 km would be my last one. I do take a while to warm up for any sport but come on The cookies and drink lasted for quite a while and I only started dragging in the last 5 km but I was still passing people uphill, oh ya. Diesel finishes hard.
Very satisfying achievement, and to think I was considering not doing it.. I feel reenergized and I have been running with a friend preparing for a 1/2 marathon in August. Go big or go home. Don’t let that little voice tell you that there are things you can’t do.
